Abstract

This paper analyzes textual strategies and military techniques found in the writings of the literatus and military scholar Fan Jingwen, who committed suicide in 1644 after the capture of Beijing by the rebel Li Zicheng. Fan's works have been little studied and yield new insights into the military and political events at the end of the Ming. Drawing on a wide range of sources, especially including the ideas of the classical Mohists, Fan sought to provide his readers with information to aid them in drawing their own conclusions about what to do in their own particular situations. © 2009, Maney Publishing.
