Abstract

The aim of the study was to review the literature regarding issues surrounding attempted suicide and to provide a selective overview of the topic. Despite common usage of the term, the term attempted suicide is sometimes confused with other self-harm behaviours. However, the term "attempted suicide" should be used only when there is clear intention to die and but, for some reason, the individual is rescued. Even among genuine suicide attempters the lethality of the action should be taken into account. Clinicians should assess the suicidal intent and lethality of attempted suicides and provide clear treatment plans for them. Their behaviour carries a high probability of repetition, and attempted suicide is a major risk factor for subsequent completed suicide. © 2009 Giovanni Fioriti Editore s.r.l.
