Abstract

The different theories of the drives might very well concur in accounting for clinical or social situations in which destruction prevails over sexual satisfaction, in so far as, according to the second theory of the drives, diversion to the external world implies a fusion of death and life drives by way of motor discharge. Our understanding of lethal passages to the act or mass exterminations, and, in treatment, of the pernicious effects of violence suffered or the suicide of someone close, leads to question regarding psychic limits, narcissism and envy. Freud's death drive and drive defusion can in this case serve as useful references.
