Abstract

When Western mass media deal with wife beatings, suicide bombings, and other forms of violence that occur in Islamic communities, liberal and progressive intellectuals react by saying that such actions do not represent mainstream Islam which is peaceful, tolerant, etc. While avoiding judgment of any particular religion as violent or peaceful, as compatible or incompatible with democracy and modernity, I propose to consider how religion turns into ideology. I will examine the political and cultural processes through which religious ideas stop being what they are and become instead an ideology. © 2009 Taylor & Francis.
