Abstract

During 1997, 634 patients arriving to the Urgency Department of "Carlos Manuel de Céspedes" Hospital for suicide attempts were studied with the objective of determine their epidemiological characteristics. There were analyzed variables like age, sex, suicide method, background of suicidal attempt, motive of present tentative, and destination of the patients from the Urgency Department. Patients were 473 females (74,6 %), and 161 males (25,4 %) and admission were most common among patients aged 15 to 24 years (43,5 %). The most common method of injury was the ingestion of toxic substances, particularly psychoactive drugs. A 53,3 % had previous suicidal attempts; the motive of suicide attempts was family conflicts following problems with the partner, depression and the alcoholic intoxication. The 19,9 % abandoned the hospital and 16,2 % needed hospitalization.
