Abstract

Congenital absence or defects of the pericardium are very rare. The incidental finding of a congenital absence of the pericardium in the case of a 55-year-old man who died after committing suicide by cutting his throat is reported. The autopsy revealed a complete absence of the pericardium with a hypertrophic heart (510 g). The man had suffered from non-specific chest pains and dyspnoea which could be attributed to bronchial asthma. © 2009 Springer Medizin Verlag.
