Abstract

Study of Autopsy profile in cases of hanging was studied at M.R. Medical College, Gulbarga, Karnataka (India) for 5-years. The study revealed that majority of the victims was illiterates & agriculturists. Most of them committed complete, indoor hanging using the rope. Congestion of face, parchmentisation of skin is noticed in more than half of the cases. Dribbling of saliva, petechiae over the face and neck region and protrusion of tongue with blackening were evidenced. Clenched hands were an exclusive finding. Urinary & faecal discharge, semen & genital discharge, postmortem staining and discoloration of nail bed are the external findings in most of the cases. Post-mortem staining helped in correlating duration, mode and type of hanging. Damage to neck structure is rather rare and rarest is hyoid bone fracture.
