Abstract

Long-term medication has a vital role in reducing the frequency and severity of acute episodes of both mania and depression in patients with bipolar affective disorder. Additionally, treatment has been shown to reduce patients' risk of suicide. Most treatments can cause significant side effects and require therapeutic drug monitoring or follow-up monitoring of several biochemical or physical parameters. Clinicians also need to take extra care when dealing with young, old or pregnant patients, and any decisions to stop treatment should be carefully considered.
