Abstract

Isotretinoin is frequently used as an effective medication for treating acne. Most patients are informed about its teratogenicity but the possible psychopathological side effects such as severe depression and suicidality are largely unknown. Because gynaecologists are often involved when prescribing contraceptives, they have the chance to advise patients of these possible side effects-even when they are not the prescribing physicians. The personal report of the second author makes clear how severe these psychic side effects can be and how important it is for young people's development to recognise these problems. © 2008 Springer Medizin Verlag.
