Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the presence of signs of burnout among French high-school students as well as the factors contributing to its appearance. Two hundred and fifty-two high-school students from sixth-form classes took part in this study by filling out a questionnaire. Among them, 28.7% had higher than average academic stress scores, 47.6% had high burnout scores and 28.5% of them had scores on CES-D scale associated with probable major depression. Burnout seems to be produced by school-related events, such as academic stress. Likewise, this study shows a close link between depression and burnout among adolescents. However, neither burnout, nor academic stress has a direct impact on suicidal thoughts. Thus, this study shows the occurrence of signs of burnout among French high school students similar to those found among adults in professional situations. Further studies are necessary in order to understand the factors contributing to student burnout, as well as the consequences of this phenomenon, better. © 2008 Association Francaise de Thérapie Comportementale et Cognitive.
