Abstract

The suicide bomb attacks that took place in Casablanca on May 16th 2003 ended Morocco as an exception. These brutal attacks proved that the political struggle moved outside the confines of political institutions and that the political parties did not represent the mood of the country. King Mohammed VIth took action and a law was passed in December 2006, bringing about structural changes to the system of politics and a restriction in the number of parties. This law resulted in improvements, even if political groups are more concerned with gaining royal approval in order to obtain material advantage than putting forward concrete proposals and actions. The relative but undeniable failure of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces coupled with the work of a few left of centre political parties, following the parliamentary elections held on 7th September 2007, is responsible for the reshuffle of the political scene and the elaboration of plan of reforms for the country.
