Abstract

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels killed 11 troops at a northern military headquarters on September 9, 2008, in its one of the largest attacks. The Security Forces Headquarters (Wanni), or SFHQ (W), in Vavuniya, located in the northernmost town under government control, was attacked. The rebel suicide group launched ground attacks, and the LTTE Zin Z 143 aircraft dropped four locally made bombs on the headquarters. The government claimed that a Sir Lanka Air Force CAC F-7M interceptor fired air-to-air missiles to destroy one aircraft over the rebel-held northeastern coastal town of Mullaitivu. Military sources have clarified that the Indra II radar in the headquarters, supplied by India, was the main rebel target. This is the seventh air attack carried out by the Tamil Tigers, while fighting in the northern Wanni region has become intense after government security forces reached the outer fringes of LTTE.
