Abstract

Though several agencies are confronted with the question of suicidality following the arrest of an individual, in practice there is little information of good quality or sufficient detail; often intuitive assessments are not explained or assessments on the some person are contradictory. It is useful to differentiate acute suicidality from an increased long-term suicide risk. The latter is best identified by using screening tools, which provide objective and comparable data and allow developing risk profiles. Acute suicidality is better diagnosed with clinical intuition. Both methods should be essential components of a successful suicide prevention programme.
