Abstract

Depression is a common finding in the elderly, often related with a high rate of suicide. Transient or reversible cognitive disorders can also be associated with dementia, responsible for behavioral problems and agitation. Test treatment with antidepressants can be ineffective in 30 to 40% of patients because of drug-resistant forms. We report three cases of drug-resistant depression in old people suffering from dementia, which was well improved by electroconvulsive therapy. © 2008 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.
