Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to evaluate the characteristics of poisoning and psychological status in cases presented to an emergency department with poisoning.

METHODS: The study group (Group 1) consisted of 86 cases between the ages of 16 and 27 who were presented to the Mersin University Faculty of Medicine between January 2005 and January 2006. The control group (Group 2) consisted of 95 cases with similar age and gender characteristics that were presented to the emergency department for reasons other than suicide attempt. Beck Children's Depression Inventory and Pier-Harris Self-Concept Scale were performed.

RESULTS: Of total 181 cases, 86 (18 male, 68 female) were in Group 1 (the cases with suicide attempt) and 95 (30 male, 65 female) were in Group 2. The important risk factors for the suicide attempt included having problems with parents, ending of a romantic relationship in the last one year and having problems in peer relations. The levels of depression and anxiety were higher in Group 1 than Group 2, while the level of self-confidence was lower in Group 1 than Group 2.

CONCLUSIONS: Our results emphasized the importance of biopsychosocial approach in cases with deliberate self harm and taking preventive measures before attempt.
