Abstract

Varanasi has been known for its fine Zari silk weaving. The jacquard silk production and weaving is a source of living for the 100,000 poor Muslims living in this place. This city is so poor that people die out of starvation and TB while some abandon their family and some even commit suicide out of desperation. Thus, the Banares silk weaving industry desperately needs help as it is in total crisis. Added to this, the Chinese are copying this Banares silks and produce cheaper fabric. The weavers are like prisoners as they are housed by their employers. On the brighter side, there are some people that works for the change of women's status, provides education and tries to improve the weaving community. The Government Training Institute trains people in two different training textile process which has four different divisions. These are the design department, the wet room, the weaving area and the computer aided design studios. The two types of training are a degree and a short vocational course. The degree course is a three year course which covers all aspects of textile design while the short course are for young scholars that are trained for three areas for four months.
