Abstract

This article is based on a presentation to the Clinical Consensus on COPD Meeting in London in March 2007. It gives a potted history of man's cultivation, use and abuse of tobacco, then summarises the current strategies of controlling tobacco at international, national and community levels. It then describes the most effective strategies for helping individual smokers quit both in primary care and whilst attending hospitals. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
