Abstract

OBJECTIVE of study: The aim of this study is to evaluate in a hospitalized adolescent population in crisis, the prevalence of different pathologies and their link to parental mental health problems.

PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred (and) ten adolescents of age between 12 and 19 were admitted in situation of emergency. Diagnosis data, presence or absence of clinical entities such as parents mental health problems, suicide attempts, substance abuse, sexual and physical abuse were correlated between them with a test inspired from the t-test of Student.

RESULTS: We observe that 74% of hospitalized adolescents have at least one parent with psychological or psychiatric antecedent. Adjustment disorder on axis I of DSM IV and borderline personality disorder and mild mental retardation on axis II on DSM IV are correlated to presence of mental health problems of their genitors.

CONCLUSION: Presence of mental health problems of one parent represents a risk factor, often underestimated, of a hospitalisation in a crisis unit in an adolescent population. © 2007 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.
