Abstract

High mortality rates in patient with epilepsy are usually reported. This higher risk is often in relation with symptomatic epilepsies but not only. This risk of mortality is also increased in children as in adults at the beginning of the disease. This paper is a short review of papers concerning the evaluation of standardized mortality ratio in some cohort studies. Some causes and situations are also reported such as suicide and the impact of surgery. SUDEP is analysed in another paper of this review.
