Abstract

OBJECTIVEs. The purpose of the paper is to describe a patient with drug-resistant schizophrenia and leukopenia symptoms who was infected with Cytomegalovirus. Case report. A 19-year-old man diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia was admitted with acute psychotic symptoms after a suicidal attempt. Leukopenia was noted during his hospitalization in the course of treatment with several neuroleptics. After additional laboratory tests and consultations asymptomatic Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection was recognized. Commentary. The observed low leukocyte levels can be assumed to be due to CMV infection activity.
