Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate demografical, aetiological and clinical characteristics of acute poisoning in Azerbaijan Republic. For the first time we researched epidemiological data of patients with the acute poisonings, resorted to Republican toxicological center in the first half-year 2007. 52% of patients were men and 48% of them were women. 13% of cases were pediatric poisonings. The mortality rate of poisoning were 3,0%. 40% of cases were intentional (suicide attempts). Most poisonings occurred in the age range 21-30. Drug were the major cause of poisoning - 175 cases, followed by acute drug allergic reaction - 96 cases, carbon monoxide poisoning - 96 cases, corrosives - 78 cases, narcotics - 27 cases, arsenic poisonings - 7 cases; black widow spider stings and agony conditions - 6 cases each, poisonings with mineral oil - 4 cases, inhalation poisonings - 3 cases, chlorinated hydrocarbons, mushrooms poisoning and stings of bees - 1 cases each. Further studies are necessary to collect more data of tendencies, risk factors of acute poisoning in Azerbaijan for developing educational, preventive and treatment programs.
