Abstract

Suicides using firearms represent a public health problem in the world and in France, they constitute a large part of deaths by suicide. Preventing suicide by decreasing the access to firearms is a public health priority. We are proposing a review of the literature concerning the effect of decreasing the availability of firearms on the risk of suicide and also on the effect of a more restrictive legislation. Eighteen studies show a correlation between the accessibility to firearms and the risk of suicide and 15 studies show the fall of the number of suicides by firearms after a restrictive legislation has been introduced. This review of literature demonstrates the necessity of reducing access of firearms as far as suicide is concerned. © 2007.
