Abstract

Children's fatalities because of injuries in the period 1995 to 2005 were analyzed. According to 10th revision of ICD following diagnosis were included: traffic V01-V99, drowning W65-W74, suffocations W75-W84, falls W00-W19, burns X00-X09, X10-X19, poisonings X40-X49, weapon/explosive devices W32-W40, suicides X60-X84, homicides X85-Y09. In the analyzed period all toget-her 2163 children and youth from 0-19 years were killed because of injuries. From that number nine mentioned causes counted for 86.9% (1881 cases). Three leading causes were traffic 993, suicides 357 and drowning 185. The mortality data show decreasing trend mainly in the group of suicides, homicides, accident caused by weapon/explosive devices. The most frequent cause traffic doesn't show decreasing trend. Mortality data although after detailed inspection sometimes even wrong give the overall picture of burden of diseases in the population. The authors suggested more detailed analysis of existing data as well as introduction of child fatality review program. More detailed information will allow better understanding of the problem as a whole. Such data could help future interventions and shape prevention measures tailored to the need of Croatian children's population.
