Abstract

Drug addictions are widely known in the contemporary society. In the last few years, there has been a considerable increase in the abuse of psychoactive substances. Nowadays, almost all of the world-known illegal drugs are offered in Bulgaria. The most dangerous drug for the society health is heroin. Aim of the investigation was to study the peculiarities and the type of the damages in acute heroin intoxication and in combined with other psychoactive substances (PAS) intoxications under conditions of heroin dependence. Subjects of the study were 125 heroin-addicted patients, who had been treated in the Clinic of Toxicology, Emergency Medicine Institute "N. I. Pirogov" Of them, 100 patients had acute heroin and combined intoxication and 25 subjects were in alternative group of heroin addicted without acute intoxication, hospitalized for detoxification. For the investigation, clinical, clinico-laboratory, toxico-chemical and instrumental methods were applied. The results of the study showed that the relative part of the investigated persons aged between 19 and 25 years was the highest, whereas men prevailed. One of the reasons of acute intoxication in the studied patients was suicidal attempt, and in a higher percentage - accidental overdosage of heroin or its combination with other psychoactive substances. The clinical manifestation of the acute intoxications was characterized by minimal predominance of the mild forms. Combined intoxications with heroin and a few PAS prevailed over monotoxic heroin intoxications. Main way of taking heroin was the intravenous injection. The main clinical manifestations of acute intoxication in monotoxic as well as in combined intoxications were on the part of the nerve system, the respiratory system and the cardiovascular system. The predominating combined use of psychoactive substances is extremely unfavourable for the organism because of synergism and potentiating the effects of the different PAS.
