Abstract

The various challenges faced by armed forces in identifying adversaries in modern warfare taking place in populated areas are discussed. Operations in urban areas pose specific challenges for military planners. Street fighting requires specific force deployments to counter operations by snipers and those willing to engage in suicide tactics to achieve effect. It is emphasized that the UK and NATO forces will need to be able to switch their operations from the rural and mountainous environments to the urban at will in order to carry out their mission and to respond to the specific challenges posed by time-sensitive targets.
