Abstract

Background. Searching for reasons of suicide attempts during adolescence is an area of interest for both pediatricians and psychologists. Aims. The purpose of this study was to analyze reasons for attempting suicide by teenagers, their family situation and psychological condition before the suicide attempt Patients and methods. 103 teenagers (87 girls and 16 boys) hospitalized after a suicide attempt. During meetings with clinical psychologist we used an verbal, semi-structured interview with the patient and her/his parent/parents to collect information about: reasons for attempting suicide, family situation, psychological condition of the patient.

RESULTS. The predominant reasons for suicide attempts were associated with family life. More than half of the respondents were growing up in complete families, but in 17 of them emotional abuse had been occurring and in 15 of them, one of the parents abused alcohol. Among the examined patients 49% of examined patients reported suicidal thoughts before attempting suicide and almost 38% reported that they committed the suicide attempt under a strong and unexpected impulse. Over 36% of the respondents had manifested auto aggressive behaviors before the suicide attempt.

CONCLUSIONS. Suicide attempts during adolescence in most cases are a means of communication and manipulative in nature. They are a particular way of "calling out for help" for the teenager or his/her family. © 2006 by Polskie Towarzystwo Pediatryczne.
