Abstract

Postpartum depression is a mood disorder occurring within the first year after delivery. In postpartum depression, there is a risk of suicide or self-harm and of harm to the infant. Early identification and treatment of postpartum depression is essential to reduce the risk of severe depression developing. Nurses/midwiferies can assist in assessing women for postpartum depression by knowing the right questions to ask the women for more information and more help. Assessing women for postpartum depression is twofold, to help the women with her depression, and to safeguard adequately the new child or other children. Nurses/midwiferies must therefore increase their knowledge about postpartum depression to be able to help depressed mothers and their babies. With knowledge about behaviors that indicate postpartum depression, nurses can be better equipped to recognize those women who need immediate intervention. Finally, nurses/midwiferies must raise their awareness to recognize women at increased risk for postpartum depression.
