Abstract

In a young male prison population, we sought to determine distinguishing features of inmates who had childhood hyperactivity according to high scores on a Japanese version of the Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS). As a group, high-WURS inmates had less education and higher Beck Depression Inventory, and reported more violence toward others, inanimate objects, and themselves - including suicide attempts. Individuals tended to report either outwardly directed violence (toward both people and objects) or suicide attempts. Where nonsuicidal self-injurers fit in this dichotomy was not clear except that they seemed distinct from suicidal high-WURS inmates. The strongest association with a high WURS score was violence toward others ; association with a high depression score was much weaker.
