Abstract

Epidemiology is the study of distribution and determinants of disease in human population. This paper presents a closer view at the characteristics of the two main sources of suicide epidemiology in Poland: the Central Statistics Office and the Police Headquarters. It also discusses the important implications of the epidemiological data analyses on the understanding of internal and external factors of suicide. The global suicide rate has increased in the past 45 years. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) around one million people throughout the world committed suicide in the year 2000. In Poland suicide constitutes the seventh largest cause of death, with about 5 thousand people taking their lives every year and even more attempting to do so. WHO informs that the ratio of suicides to suicide attempts equals 1 to 10-15. One of the biggest difficulties in the epidemiology of suicide behavior worldwide is lack of a consistent, common nomenclature and classification procedure for suicidal act. Moreover, increased suicide rate calls for preventive strategies. Suicide epidemiology is gaining new ground as the basis for the rational preventive actions. © 2006 by Wydawnictwo Medyczne Urban & Partner.
