Abstract

The premise that significant differences exist in self-concept content, structure, and processes between 3 groups of adolescents (age 13-17) was examined in this study. A pilot (and subsequent control group) (n = 23) of non-depressed, non-behaviorally disordered adolescents, and two clinical subgroups consisting of (a) depressed adolescents (n = 30) and (b) adolescents with a history of a past suicide attempt or attempts (n = 12) were recruited and interviewed during 1996-1999. Significant relationships between decreasing levels of importance of school and family and increasing levels of mood variability were found among adolescents with a history of suicidality. Thus use of very specific assessments focused on the importance of school and family may contribute to our understanding of explicit dimensions within the self related to emotional and/or behavioral issues in adolescence. © 2006 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.
