Abstract

AIM: To understand the mental health, suicidal attitude and trend of students in technical secondary schools, so as to take early effective intervention.

METHODS: By cluster random sampling, 283 students in 3 technical secondary schools of Hebei Province were investigated using symptom checklist and the suicide attitude questionnaire between September and December 2005. The symptom checklist was consisting of 90 items, which included 10 factors such as somatization, obsession-compulsion, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation, psychotism and others. Each item was scored by 5 grades. The higher the scores, the more frequent and severe the symptoms were. The results were compared with the national youth norm and middle school student norm. The person whose score was ≥ 2 had mild mental disease; the person whose score ≥ 3 had moderate mental disease or above. The suicide attitude questionnaire of 4 dimensions, 29 items was composed of attitude to suicide characters, to suicides, to the families of suicides and to euthanasia, which was also evaluated by 5 grades: total agreement, agreement, neutrality, against and total against. The attitude to suicide of persons with scores ≤ 2.5 was affirming, approving, tolerant and comprehension; scores of 2.5-3.5 were separated to contradictory and neutrality; ≥ 3.5 was against, denying, rejecting and discrimination. The item 15 of symptom checklist "yearning to over one's life" was regarded as the standard to identify the suicidal idea. The seriousness degree of suicide idea was evaluated by the grade of score (never, mild, moderate, serious, severe). The statistics analysis was performed with t test and X2 test.

RESULTS: A total of 283 questionnaires were sent out, and 259 qualified ones were collected on the spot with the efficient rate of 91.5%. (1) The scores of 6 factors of somatization, obsession-compulsion, depression, hostility, phobic anxiety and psychotism of students in the technical secondary schools were much higher than that of the national youth norm; the scores of 6 factors of somatization, obsession-compulsion, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, phobic anxiety, psychotism were much higher than that of middle school student norm. (2) Among 124 students (47.9%) with mental disease, forty-seven students had moderate or more severe mental disease, accounted for 18.2%. No significant difference between male and female students was found. The number of female students with mild and moderate mental disease or more severe was much more than that of the male students on interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety and hostility. (3) Most of the students were contradictory or neutrality to suicide character and suicides, and the majority considered the families of suicide and euthanasia affirmative and comprehensible. The male students who affirmed and comprehended suicide character and suicides were more than female. The female students were more than male in contradictory or neutrality, which had significant differences [(98 /68.5, 63/54.3, X2=5.507, P < 0.05); (105/73.4, 67/57.8, X2=7.048, P < 0.05)]; the attitude to family of suicides of students showed an opposite condition; and no difference was found in the attitude to ehtanasia. (4) There were 92 students with suicide idea, accounted for 35.5%, 17.0% of which with moderate degree or above including 8.6% male and 23.8% female. The female students with moderate and severe suicide idea were more than male [(24/16.8, 8/6.9, X=5.78, P < 0.05); (8/5.6, 1/0.9, X2=4.28, P < 0.05)].

CONCLUSION: The students of technical secondary schools have mental diseases of anxiety, interpersonal sensitivity, somatization, depression and hostility etc. Most of the students take an affirmative or comprehensive attitude toward family of suicides or euthanasia, and a contradictory or neutral attitude toward the suicide characters and suicides, especially the female ones. The female students with moderate and severe suicide idea are more than male. The mental health, suicidal attitude and idea of students in technical secondary schools cannot be ignored and more mental health educational work should be completed.
