Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare mortality rates among patients treated with sertindole, olanzapine or risperidone in clinical use. This was a multicentre, retrospective, records-based review of patients treated with one of the three study medications. Using hospital pharmacy records (electronic and manual), the study identified patients initiated on treatment with the three antipsychotics over 12 months. The total number of patients recruited was 876 (189 received sertindole, 377 received olanzapine and 310 received risperidone). The primary end-point comparison was crude mortality rate (CMR) presented as the number of deaths per 100 patient-years exposure to treatment. Differences in mortality rates were summarised using incidence rate ratios (IRRs). CMRs were: sertindole 1.40 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.17-5.06), olanzapine 0.79 (95% CI 0.16-2.30) and risperidone 2.87 (95% CI 1.15-5.91). Following the study protocol, the CMRs for olanzapine and risperidone were pooled and calculated at 1.60 (95% CI 0.77-2.94). The IRR for sertindole versus olanzapine and risperidone pooled was 0.88 (95% CI 0.09-4.12). The results suggest that the mortality rate for patients treated with sertindole does not differ significantly from that of patients treated with olanzapine and risperidone. © 2006 Informa UK Ltd.
