Abstract

The Netherlands Chief of Defence Staff has emphasized the importance of an expansion of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) to southern Afghanistan, which is planned to include a significant participation by Dutch forces. The Dutch PRT is to be headquartered in the provincial capital Tarin Kowt which is location of a suicide bomb attack on 5 January during a visit to Afghanistan by the US Ambassador. The Dutch ground forces that are to be sent to Uruzgan will have mortars for fire support as well as YPR-765 armoured infantry fighting vehicles equipped with 25 mm guns for force protection. Up to 250 Dutch personnel will operate in the headquarters of the multinational ISAF brigade in Kandahar.
