Abstract

OBJECTIVE: In this study, distribution of psychiatric consultation at a university hospital is evaluated according to sociodemographic characteristics of patients, clinic which referred consultation, reasons for referral, psychiatric diagnoses and treatments.

METHODS: Patients (outpatients and inpatients) whose psychiatric consultations were referred in all clinics at the Hospital of Meram Medical School of Selçuk University participated in this study between 15.06.2004 and 15.10.2004.

RESULTS: In this study 138 men (35.4%), 252 (64.4%) women totaly 390 patients were taken. Average age of the 390 participants in this study was 41 years (SD=17.6). 61.5% (n=240) of consultations were referred for inpatients and 38.5% (n=150) were for outpatients. Majority of consultations were referred from dermatology department (21.8%), emergency service (13.6%), neurology department (12.3%) and internal medicine department (9.7%). The most frequent reason for consultation referral was the psychiatric evaluation of the patient without any reason (31.8%). Other reasons were depressive complaints (15.2%), suicide attempts (14%), and anxiety complaints (7.2%). According to the result of psychiatric evaluation, a psychiatric disorder is found in 83.4% (n=316) of the consultations. The most common psychiatric diagnoses were depression (39.3%), anxiety disorders (16.6%), somatoform disorders (6.6%), and organic mental disorders (5.5%) 65.4% of the patients were treated with antidepressants, 9.8% with antipsychotics and 3.7% with benzodiazepines. 19.4% of them were offered to be followed up without drug treatment.

DISCUSSION: Various psychiatric disorders, most commonly depression, are frequently diagnosed in patients with physical illness. Therefore, the importance of "Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry" units increases gradually.
