Abstract

Depression, understood as a set of scientifically coded symptoms, is something that is perceived by ordinary people as deep personal distress, all the more difficult to explain when it strikes individuals whom life seems to have given everything. In particular, for an athlete, the end of a professional sporting career can prove to be a very critical moment, especially when, on the one hand, it is the result of a choice made without total conviction, and on the other, when it becomes evident that the individual is having difficulty facing up to the new responsibilities that have taken its place. Gianluca Pessotto's attempted suicide aroused enormous public interest because he is a person very much in the public eye, but the truth is that depression induces people to attempt to "end it all" far more often than reports in the mass media might suggest. And the causes for this may be sought both inside and around us.
