Abstract

PURPOSE: In this study our aim was to reveal sociodemographic-sociocultural and family traits of young suicide attempters.

METHOD: We examined 63 young patients admitted to the hospital with suicide attempt whose ages were between 15 and 24. Of these 63 suicide attempters, 48 (76.2%) were female, 15 (%23.8) were male. We compared these patients with 65 healthy controls according to their sociodemographic-sociocultural and family traits. Healthy controls were similar age and gender with suicide attempters. Of these 65 controls 46 (70.8%) were female, 19 (29.2%) were male. To evaluate suicide attempters and controls we used a questionnaire that was formed by authors. Chi-square and t-test analysis were used to evaluate the data.

FINDINGS: Fifty-eight of the patients had attempted suicide by ingestion of drugs, four by ingestion of insecticides, and one by hanging. Of the suicide attempters 47.6% (n=30) had the wish to die, 44.4% (n=28) had thoughts about suicide for a period of 2 weeks or more in their life and 31.7% (n=20) had made previous suicide attempts. We found out that when compared to controls. young patients with suicide attempt had lower education levels, more absence from school or regular employment, more past history of psychiatric disorder-care, lower parental education level, more witness or exposure to physical abuse, higher parental psychopathology and more smoked Discussion: This study shows strong association between suicide attempt and dysfunctional family rather than parental divorce or separation.

CONCLUSION: Knowledge of associated factors with suicide attempt is important in suicide preventive work and will guide the clinician in the important task of assessing suicidal young people.
