Abstract

Suicide prevention is a key part of a European initiative to improve capability in mental health promotion. In England the government's Saving lives: our healthier nation sets out a suicide prevention strategy with a target to reduce the suicide rate by 20% by 2010. Prevention measures include public education to raise suicide awareness and skills-based training In risk assessment for health-care professionals. STORM is a skills-based suicide prevention training package. It focuses on the key skills needed to assess and manage a person at risk of suicide. It is evidence based and has undergone three evaluations proving to be effective in improving skills, attitudes to suicide prevention and confidence in dealing with suicide risk. A flexible structure based on four modules was found to be favourable especially with GPs who find time for training difficult. The STORM package is now offered commercially to health and social care organizations nationally and internationally. An adapted version has been developed for HM Prison service. Further research is being done to explore the processes needed for successful implementation of STORM accross, an organization. Our findings will help address any issues and offer possible solutions. © 2005 Radcliffe Publishing.
