Abstract

Suicide is one of the most frequent causes of mortality among young people. It is essential to adopt an accepting and nonjudgemental attitude when talking with the suicidal child or adolescent and the parents in the initial consultation, so as to make real contact and build up a relationship. It is the task of the physician on emergency call-out to assess the danger to life. In the hospital emergency room the physician is required to elicit the circumstances that have provoked the suicidal behavior and any other behavioural problems the patient may have, and must also seek for any factors within the family that could have fostered the behaviours and initiate a crisis intervention. A detailed evaluation and therapy are not possible without admitting the patient to a hospital with access to paediatric psychiatric services. In the subsequent stages of treatment appropriate problem-solving skills and a forward-looking attitude should then be developed. © Springer Medizin Verlag 2005.
