Abstract

In Germany suicide ranks as the second and in the USA as the third leading cause of death in adolescents. Risk factors for suicide are impulsive and self-injurious behavior, depression, conduct disorder, and child abuse. Arround 5 - 10% of patients with borderline personality disorder commit suicide. Dialectical-behavioral therapy (DBT) was developed by Marsha Linehan specifically for the outpatient treatment of chronically parasuicidal patients who were diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. The modified version of DBT for adolescents (DBT-A) was adapted for an outpatient treatment setting in Germany by our group. In a pilot study 12 adolescents were treated and the follow-up evaluated. Initial promising results of this open trial are presented. © Hogrefe Verlag, Göttingen 2005.
