Abstract

The author testifies to his experience as prison psychiatrist. She describes the prison environment, the violence, the arbitrary and illegal nature of what exists in prison. The psychiatric pathologies encountered are described, bearing in mind the specific context of environment and incarceration. The difficulty of psychiatric treatment is tackled along with the risk of confusion between individual and social treatment, and also between psychiatric and criminal dangerousness. The question of the preventive utility of prison is raised.
