Abstract

In spite of the fact that suicide is very complex, multicausal phenomenon, the different psycho-social suicide risk factors can trigger suicide only, when the person has major psychiatric illness at thee same time. Major depression is the most important risk factor for suicide: 59-87 percent of suicide victims have (mainly untreated) major depression at the time ot their death, and 11-19 percent of untreated depressives will die by suicide. Several long-term follow-up studies demonstrated that the suicide mortality of treated depressives is significnatly lower than that of untreated depressives. In agreement with recent international findings, data from Hungary also indicate that better recognition and treatment of depressive disorders plays an important role in the 40 percent decline of suicide rate of Hungary during the last 20 years.
