Abstract

For many patients schizophrenia is a suicide-promoting catastrophe - even during treatment. The rate of suicides with about 10% shows clearly the dimension of the problem. A review of the risk factors makes evident that in many cases suicide is a non-psychotic balancing reaction on the impairments of the illness and its psychosocial consequences. On the basis of a confident relationship prevention and therapy require above all an acceptance of suicidal crises as an expression of hopelessness and lack of perspective, an equally understanding and careful attitude and a multimodal pragmatic management which is orientated at realistic objectives.
