Abstract

Introduction. In the last years attempted suicide is currently a significant problem among the teenage population, be coming an important health problem. Nowaday it is one of the most frequent cause of visit into a pysichiatric emergency departament and it represents 40% of there total hospitalization in this units. Material and methods. Retrospective and descriptive study of patients visited because of suicide attemp in our emergency departament from January to Agoust 2000.

RESULTS. Seventy one patients with attempted suicide were visit in emergency departament. The mean age was 15,5 years; 65 patients (91%) were female. The most common method was voluntary intoxication in 57 patients (80%). 79% have a prior Psychiatric evaluation and 24 patients (34%) have a prior suicide attempt. Recent stressful life events is the most frequent precipitator for attempting suicide in 39 patients (54,6%). 34 patients (48%) required admission to the hospital.

CONCLUSIONS. Attempted suicide is a significant problem among the teenage population, especially among teenage girls and those with prior suicide attempt. We recomended hospitalitation for a minimum of 24 hours to prevent the future attempts.
