Abstract

This paper bases its analysis on George Sand's Le dernier amour which offers useful tools for the analysis of female madness in 19th century French literature. In a context of phallocracy and social deconstruction, love becomes an irreversible madness process which eventully leads the female character to suicide. It is an illustration of a male gaze under a female signature.
