Abstract

Angry students who had been refused admission to a public university in Mexico, resorted to violent means to express their frustration over the goverment's failure to meet the demand for higher education. In the year 2003, 134,894 applicants competed for a mere 33,000 seats at the national Autonomous University of Mexico, the nation's largest public university. A major highway in Mexico was blocked by protesting students, and several suicides were also reportedly committed.
