Abstract

Suicides and suicide attempts of the elderly subject are major public health problem and present some specifications in their expression and their meaning wich are essential to recognise. The target of our retrospective survey is to describe the specifications of a panel constituted in 59 people who have attempted suicide, aged of 60+ and interned in the Medical and Psychological Centre A of Clermont-Ferrand, between 1993 and 2000. The results analysis allows us to set up a profile of the suicide attempting senior: a widow, emotionally or socially isolated, depressive and most of the time attempting suicide with medicines or in a more agressive way by knife wounds or phlebotomies. This information should help in developing preventive measures among the elderly people identified as having potential suicidal tendencies. © 2003 Éditions scientifiques et médicales Elsevier SAS.
