Abstract

The author makes a medico-legal and criminological analysis of three books written by the French novelist Raymond Guérin (1905-1955). The first (La Tête vide, 1952) concerns the murder-suicide of an adulterous couple; the second (Les Poulpes, 1953) deals with the novelist's own experience as a prisoner of war; and the third (La Peau dure, 1948) focuses on an imprisonment resulting from a charge of criminal abortion. The author concludes that in these three works, Raymond Guérin demonstrates considerable psychological finesse in the description and understanding of criminal phenomena and the deprivation of freedom.
