Abstract

Over a long period, adolescence has been considered as a time of crisis or storm and stress. However, many studies show that severe problems that put one's development at risk are quite rare (e.g., severe family crises, clinical depression, suicide). More frequent, but less severe behavioral problems, such as the consumption of alcohol and soft drugs, are even used to solve adolescents' developmental tasks (e.g., gaining peer recognition). Risk factors for adolescent crises are early pubertal timing, behavior problems in childhood, former psychiatric disorders, lacking social support, and the accumulation of diverse stressors. Prevention programs should foster adolescents' competence to solve their developmental tasks. © Springer-Verlag 2003.
