Abstract

A 51-year old man is described who presented with complex psychiatric symptoms of unknown origin, but who eventually proved to be suffering from multiple sclerosis. The case history shows that the first symptoms of the disease can be a mood disorder (manic episode), personality change and subcortical dementia. Diagnostic problem arising in this case and implications for treatment are discussed.
