Abstract

Copper Sulphate, used in agriculture as a disinfectant and pesticide, is a highly toxic compound which is rarely used with suicidal intent, but at high dose, is surely lethal. Among its more serious, dose dependant effects, are cardiovascular collapse, haemolysis, kidney and liver failure, shock and death. The case of a 52 year old patient, who had ingested 60g of copper sulphate at 98-99% with the aim of suicide, is described. Prompt treatment with appropriate supportive therapy and CVVH allowed for the survival of the patient.
